The transformation of Belle Vue Mills in the centre of Skipton has taken a significant step forward with the appointment of the main building contractors.

Developer, Novo Homes, has reached agreement with North Midland Building Ltd, part of North Midland Construction PLC, and work is due to commence at the iconic site on Broughton Road on November 1st and is currently scheduled to last approximately 120 weeks.

The appointment is also good news for the people of Skipton with the contractors stating their intention to use local labour and sub contractors as much as possible.

‘It is the company’s intention to appoint local labour and sub contractors wherever possible and minimise local disruption during this major contract,’ said Brian Evans, Main Board Director of North Midland Construction PLC and Chairman of North Midland Building Ltd.

A major part of the construction process will be to ensure that the refurbishment of the existing mills is sympathetic to the original buildings and in keeping with the traditional Skipton architecture.

‘We are aware of both the historical significance and the local interest in the site and have considerable experience in undertaking similar projects to the Belle Vue Mills development and trust the venture will be successful for all those involved,’ commented Brian Evans.

A spokesperson for Novo Homes said,’ North Midland Building Ltd. embraced our vision for the site and we are delighted to be working with them on this exciting project. Their experience of similar projects will be invaluable.’

When fully complete the three acre Belle Vue Mills site, adjacent to the Leeds-Liverpool canal, will be transformed into a stunning mixed use environment, combining 122 residential properties, which currently start at £139,500, office space, leisure facilities and retail outlets. Parking for 292 vehicles is also proposed.

Since the official launch in September interest has been exceptional with 40% of the apartments in phase 1 already sold and the developer expects a further increase once building works start.

‘As people begin to see building work taking place the dream of property ownership at Belle Vue Mills starts to become a reality and will stimulate further sales,’ said a spokesperson for Novo Homes.

There has also been significant interest from retailers and the developer hopes to announce more details shortly.
